John Deere Waterloo Works Foundry Skilled: Pattern Maker in Waterloo Works, Iowa
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lays out, constructs, finishes, checks, modifies and maintains complex wood, metal, plaster and/or plastic patterns, models and related pattern equipment including core boxes and fixtures which have angles and relationships between holes and sections difficult to hold and which require considerable hand work due to the number of projections or angles.
TYPES OF MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED OR OPERATED:
Power-driven wood and metal working machines, such as lathes, drills, grinders, band saw, cut-off saw, sanders, brace and bit, routers, etc.; hand tools such as saws, planes, hammer, rules, files, calipers; soldering equipment, etc.
JOB DETAILS:
Receives print from supervisor, together with any special information or instructions.
Carries work to completion with minimum of supervision.
Makes preliminary study of print.
Makes layout, sketches and template if necessary.
Selects wood or block of metal to be used or rough casting or any other material which may be provided.
Determines parting line of pattern, amount of draft to be allowed, and type of cores to be used to produce castings.
Determines shrinkage to be expected.
Makes allowances for machining and decides on working procedure.
Assembles parts and fastens together with screws, bolts, dowels, solder, glue, etc.
Casting may be split, finished and then mounted on plate, or cast directly with plate and finished with it.
Finishes metal pattern by filling low spots, mis-runs and joints with solder or other material, then filing, scraping, grinding, sanding and polishing.
Finishes wood pattern by filling cracks and joints and making radii in angles with wood fillets, wax, or putty. Files, sands and coats with shellac, lacquer or other material.
Lays out, constructs and finishes plastic or plaster patterns or core boxes.
Checks, modifies and maintains existing wood, metal, plaster and/or plastic patterns and models.
Makes, modifies and maintains supplementary equipment such as core patterns, core boxes, core driers, sample flasks, fixtures, etc.
Sharpens and makes minor repairs to pattern maker tools and equipment used and operated.
May also perform duties such as the following in additional to the duties listed above:
Go over job with supervisor, designer, or foundry supervisor to straighten out problems of construction or molding.
Finish up rough castings made from wood pattern.
Make plaster casts.
Instruct and direct work of apprentices.
Lubricates and cleans equipment, cleans work area and performs other miscellaneous duties inherent to the job
