Mahaska Health Partnership Medical Technologist in Oskaloosa, Iowa

At Mahaska Health the Medical technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist provides oversight of Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), Certified Laboratory Assistants (CLA) and Phlebotomists at the direction of the Medical Director and or Laboratory Director.

Essential Job Functions include but are not limited to:

  • Comply with regulations for all accrediting and regulatory bodies such as Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), The Joint Commission (TJC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Federal Drug Administration (FDA).

  • Perform diagnostic and monitoring tests on blood, urine, feces, cerebrospinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, and other body fluids.

  • Evaluate results of testing and quality controls, calibrations, calibration verification/linearity/reportable range.

  • Review and perform initial sign-off on Quality Control, temperature, and maintenance checks within the designated domain area(s) (Chemistry, Blood Bank, Coagulation, kit testing, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Hematology).

  • Perform initial annual review of all procedures within the designated domain area(s) Chemistry, Blood Bank, Coagulation, kit testing, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Hematology).

  • Serve as a first-line resource for Phlebotomists, Clinical Lab Assistants, and Medical Laboratory Technicians.

  • Perform venipunctures and capillary blood collections using, proper patient identification, correct tubes, handling, and labeling appropriately.

  • Understand, perform, analyze, and record quality control tests for each procedure including action taken to correct problems.

  • Able to recognize deviations from expected results and analyze problems on scientific principles.

  • Collect and prepare non-blood specimens for testing.

  • Process specimens and reports to and from reference laboratories

  • Consult with providers, patients, and other medical personnel on laboratory tests and results.

  • Store and process blood products for transfusion.

  • Understand and perform all procedures on the in-house test menu including new procedures as added.

  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with employees, visitors, medical staff, and patients, keeping in mind the person’s unique needs within their age category (refer to Mahaska Health Partnership’s Age Specific Standards of Care).

  • Use the current EMR per standard workflow processes.

  • Comply with CMS and MHP regulations and policies for ordering and billing of tests.

  • Follow procedures and policies for handling of infectious, chemical, and electrical hazards, including the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets.

  • Communicate orders and results accurately by phone, in person, and in writing  Follow policies for documentation of results, phoned/faxed orders and results, maintenance, calibrations, calibration verification/linearity/ reportable range, proficiency surveys, performance improvement, manual updates, and other activities as designated by the supervisor/director.

  • Obtain and maintain certification and ability to perform DOT and Non-DOT urine drug screen collections according to requesting company protocol.

  • Obtain and maintain certification and ability to perform DOT and Non-DOT breath alcohol testing (BAT certification)

  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job.

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

Requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent).

  • Successfully completed Medical Technology internship (minimum of 6 months) or six months of equivalent work experience or a combination of both.

  • Required to show proof of having completed the Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.

  • Must show proof of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate or obtain it within 6 months of hire.

  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
