This role is a perfect opportunity for someone looking for a challenging and vital role in a manufacturing facility with a leader in the cement industry. The cement plant in Mason City, IA is looking for someone who is hardworking and dedicated to become part of the team. The Kiln Engineer reports directly to the Production Manager and is responsible for day to day direction of the kiln manufacturing process; including cost control, process improvement, and attainment of key performance indicators. Some of the responsibilities include the following.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the kiln, raw material & fuel preparation, and the raw mill system. Review and analyze operational data to evaluate and recommend changes for efficient and continuous operation. Ensures management is aware of trends and operational issues in a timely manner and is responsible for communicating proposed solutions.

  • Lead daily consultation with the Shift Supervisors and Control Room Operators to discuss and evaluate kiln performance and the resulting impact on overall production. Facilitate operational approaches to ensure production goals are met on a daily basis.

  • Provide technical expertise to diagnose delays in operations, leading the efforts to remedy problems by taking appropriate actions to restore correct operating procedures. Advise management and operations staff on necessary adjustments and changes to protocols to minimize future incidents. Oversee the implementation of corrective actions.

  • Collaborate with the plant Quality Control Department to meet product specifications and production goals.

  • Collaborate with plant Maintenance Department to properly coordinate weekly and annual maintenance plans.

  • Ensure compliance with plant policies & procedures, safety, environmental, state and federal process regulations.

  • Manage Alternative fuel(s) inventory, planning. Coordinate with Purchasing to schedule alternative fuel shipments.

  • Mentor and coach junior engineer(s).

  • Advise, design and execute process and/or equipment trials.

  • Manage Capital projects including conception, equipment and installation, bid evaluation, execution and make good analysis.

  • Direct all material handling and refractory replacement projects. Responsible for the selection and execution of all refractory and relining project.

  • Analyze and interpret Pyro process data for other departments as required.

  • Ensure maximum utilization and performance of process equipment.

  • Maintain up to date industry knowledge of kiln/RM operations.

This position will be based in Mason City, IA


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

  • At least 5 years of experience in cement manufacturing or closely related industry

  • Knowledge of chemistry of raw mix, clinker, and cement

  • Ability to quickly understand plant-specific Title V, NESHAP and other prevailing emissions permits.

  • Knowledge or understanding of SAP and Siemens CEMAT

  • Proven capability to make timely, critical decisions, often under conditions of uncertainty and stress

  • Detailed knowledge about process equipment interlocking

  • Working knowledge and technical competency in the cement manufacturing process

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office

  • Working knowledge of data historian(s) such as PxTrend and Code PLC Logic preferred

  • Experience in formal Root Cause Analysis methods

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills

  • Knowledge of MSHA regulations and guidelines

  • Proficient in use of mechanical systems, control systems, and diagnostic skills

  • Motivation, ability, and willingness to participate in the plant on-call schedule, to troubleshoot and help address issues that arise during off-shifts and weekends
