Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under immediate supervision, to perform maintenance and construction of storm and sanitary sewers. This role involves inspecting, cleaning and repairing sewer lines and the sewer system.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and

  • One (1) year experience in sewer maintenance or construction work.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid Iowa Class B CDL with tank endorsement and allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes.

  • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination and drug screen.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Uses rods, slabs, nozzles, rotating cutters and other devices to remove clogs and obstructions from sewer lines;

  • Flushes sewers using high-pressure hoses;

  • Assists with installation of new sewer lines or system upgrades by digging trenches, laying pipes and installing new sanitary and storm sewer lines;

  • Backfills gaps around pipe, manholes and inlets;

  • Tamps fill to create a solid, even surface;

  • Breaks in sewer lines;

  • Caulks joints with cement, corktight, hocum, rubber gaskets, etc;

  • Assists in constructing concrete forms for concrete manholes and spillways;

  • Cleans catchbasins using an adapter;

  • Cleans culverts, drains and ditches;

  • Operates air hammers, pumps, compressors and similar equipment;

  • Builds, repairs and maintains fences;

  • Removes snow from streets and sidewalks using public works vehicles;

  • Applies salt, anti-icing and de-icing chemicals to roads;

  • Operates dump trucks and similar equipment;

  • Performs related work as required.
