Dart Maintenance Supervisor in Des Moines, Iowa

Position Summary:

The Maintenance Supervisor will manage and coordinate work assignments of technicians and other maintenance personnel in the repair, servicing and cleaning of all vehicles in the DART fleet; as well as, support the development of all maintenance personnel.

Essential Functions of this Position:

  • Monitor and evaluate technicians in the performance of their daily duties- coach and/or recommend additional training when needed.

  • Plan and allocate resources to effectively staff and accomplish the work to meet departmental productivity and quality goals. Monitor maintenance activities to ensure quality control and compliance with program goals through the maintenance management information systems.

  • Maintain on- going contact with other DART departments regarding the status of vehicle repair work, equipment replacements and respective operational needs.

  • Provide technical supervision and on-the-job training as needed to employees that have been placed in the DART apprenticeship program. Assure that program training requirements are met.

  • Respond to all road calls promptly and safely by assigning maintenance personnel, monitoring their actions/performance, and following up with concerned parties as appropriate.

  • Manage personnel assigned within the department through the participation in potential disciplinary action, direct hiring within the assigned team, and coaching employees on job performance as required within collective bargaining agreement and DART policy guidelines.

  • Make business decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, justifiable, and defensible in accordance with organization policies and procedures.

    Non-essential Functions of this Position:

  • Develop and conduct monthly safety meetings.

  • Implement and maintain preventive maintenance programs for the fleet

  • Analyzing and reporting on data available through various software programs; recommend updates and changes as needed.

    Education and/or Experience:

  • Two year degree in a technical/mechanical field required or equivalent experience

  • Three years supervisory experience preferred.

  • Class B Iowa Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Airbrake endorsements preferred or the ability to obtain upon employment

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Supervisory principles and practices

  • Federal, State and local legislation, especially pertaining to transit and maintenance operations

  • Collective Bargaining Agreement administration

  • Office computers and software for word processing, email management, data analysis and presentations

Skill, Ability or Competency to:

  • Ability to work varied schedules including nights and weekends.

  • Diagnose and direct repair/replacement of engines, components, accessories, power trains, suspension systems and other mechanical, electrical, electronic and related units of buses and other vehicles operated and maintained in the transit industry.

  • Provide leadership to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships while communicating effectively internally to promote an open-door atmosphere, build teams, problem solve, and build rapport to positive influence the actions and responsibilities of subordinates.

  • Ability to coach and educate a diverse audience internally and externally.

  • Analyze, interpret, and manage complex data or organizational issues, use good judgment and common sense to make logical, cost effective and critical decisions to support innovative, high-performance operations in a safe and fiscally responsible manner.

  • Maintain a calm and confident demeanor in high stress situations.

  • Accuracy with detail, planning and organizing to develop and adhere to annual operational/capital budgets in a timely manner.

  • Communicate complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing, to a wide array of audiences.

  • All other assigned duties

    Supervisor Responsibilities:

Mechanic Technicians, Body Shop Technicians, Bus Service Workers and Interior Cleaners, Tire/Utility personnel.

Physical Demands:

On a normal work day, this position requires:

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping and physical activity

  • Extensive use of hands, fingers, legs and arms in operations requiring constant motion

  • Must be able to reach/extend hand and arms in any direction (horizontal and vertical movement)

  • Must be able to seize and hold objects with hand or hands and use fingers to carry out designated tasks

  • Clarity of vision sufficient to see objects clearly at distances of 20 inches or less.

  • Ability to hear normal verbal conversations

    Work Environment:

On a normal day this position requires:

  • Prolonged standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying heavy objects occasionally up to 150 lbs.

  • Requires physical flexibility in order to occasionally access limited space areas.

  • Must regularly climb stairs to both board and exit buses.

  • Extensive use of hands, fingers, legs, and arms in grasping objects, driving equipment and using hand and power tools involved in maintenance and repair functions.

  • Requires the ability to hear normal verbal conversation in a shop environment.
