Reports to: VP of Operations
Location: Des Moines, IA
FLSA Status: Full-Time / Non-Exempt

Position Description. The Fiber Optic Service Technician will play an integral role on our technologies team for Baker Electric, Inc., an Electrical Contracting company and subsidiary of publicly traded EMCOR Group, Inc. The position, based out of Des Moines, IA, will support the region of work for IBEW Local Union 347, including everything that has to do with installing and maintain fiber optic cabling. Must be willing to join IBEW Local Union 347.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Installing new fiber optic networks and repairing existing ones as needed
Installing new infrastructure or upgrading existing infrastructure to accommodate technological advances in the telecommunications industry
Installing cable television equipment such as amplifiers, filters, splitters, and converters, as well as performing signal strength tests to ensure quality reception
Installing fiber optic equipment such as splicing machines, fiber optic test equipment, and fiber optic cable termination devices
Performing troubleshooting on fiber optic networks to identify problems and provide solutions
Take care of fiber splicing and rectify fiber optic problem areas
Develop sensor indicators and conduct timely inspections, so that a faulty fiber optic system does not destabilize its performance
Keep track of the signal strength of different devices, including, but not limited to television, telephone, and high-speed internet
Formulate and maintain system records and system designs
Determining the location of underground utilities such as gas, water, and electricity lines before beginning construction work
Installing fiber optic cables in conduits or aerial locations such as on telephone poles or between buildings
Participate in coordination meetings to assist in project updates as required for the assigned project(s)
Interface with customers and provide quality customer service with efficiency and professionalism
Maintain confidentiality of work and any Baker Electric project knowledge
Escalate critical and/or sensitive issues to Project Manager(s) or Company leadership with recommendation for resolution
Read and understand construction documents such as architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical floor plans, section views and elevations.
Other related duties as assigned

Preferred Education and Experience (Knowledge)
1 – 2 years of experience with cabling various electrical components
High School diploma or GED required
Knowledge of fiber optic cabling, splicing and troubleshooting
Understanding of basic circuit design
Ability to use various measurement instruments, hand and power tools

Physical Requirements (Ability)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, see, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, to reach with hands and arms, to climb or balance, to work off ladders, to maintain a standing position for long periods while performing work, and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to navigate around job site locations autonomously.
