Your Opportunity

The Corporate Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the laboratory. This position is accountable for the lab’s accurate and timely chemical and/or microbiological analysis of various products and environmental samples. The Corporate Laboratory Supervisor is accountable to ensure all testing time requirements or constraints are met.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Laboratory.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions

  • Supervises the operations of the Chemistry and/or Microbiology lab to ensure the lab is running efficiently and producing accurate results in a timely manner.

  • Responsible for conducting activities in support of the lab’s accreditation.

  • Conducts chemical and/or microbiological analysis of meat and poultry products, by-products, and environmental samples to ensure that Smithfield products are wholesome and adhere to internal specifications and customer requirements.

  • Gathers data on special projects which includes product, equipment, or environmental testing.

  • Manages laboratory supply inventory and purchasing.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science or related science field and 2 years’ experience in a laboratory and/or quality/food safety experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of quality assurance principles, food science and meat processing, laboratory safety; preferred.

  • In-depth understanding of microbiological testing and/or chemistry testing.

  • Knowledge of various pathogens and microbes associated with food production.

  • Hands on experience conducting microbiological testing of meat and poultry products.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of HACCP requirements.

  • Knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to uphold regulatory, company and customer standards.

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time.

  • May be required to work long hours and weekends.

  • Must have the ability to complete required applicable forms in English, which requires the ability to read and write in English.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

  • The laboratory environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate however some test equipment can be loud.

  • Regularly required to stand; sit; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and smell.

  • Frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds. Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
