Purpose Statement:
To learn and demonstrate proficiency in all foundry related positions including furnace attendant, sand molding and cast metals finishing. Operators will be expected to cross-train and flex between positions based on business need.

Essential Responsibilities:
Foundry Specialist
- Ensures that proper ventilation procedures are followed before melting or pouring occurs.
- Charges the melting furnace with proper alloys in preparation for pouring.
- Insures proper melt by adjusting temperatures and de gasses or fluxes as required.
- Prepares metals in furnace by pumping gases into molten metal to remove hydrogen and other impurities.
- Spreads salt-based flux on molten metal to complete degassing.
- Pours molten metal into molds, observing exact pouring techniques to achieve acceptable results.
- Adjusts controls on the furnace to insure proper temperature for pouring.
- Insures molds are properly prepared (weighted if necessary) before pouring.
- Troubleshoots problems encountered in the pouring process and keeps the Plant Manager aware of all obstacles encountered.
- Maintains required records of production processes as instructed.
- Performs all duties of a Utility Operator as time allows or need dictates.
- Maintains an awareness of how process improvements can be achieved and makes related recommendations to the department supervisor.
Sand Molding
- Makes cores by obtaining core molds, sprays patterns with mold release agent.
- Fills flasks with sand and packs tightly, using striker to properly level sand.
- Removes solidified sand from the mold and places on conveyor system.
- Places cores on molds, and assembles all components of molds, placing adhesive on mold component.
- Removes hardened sand from forms.
- Inspects and cleans molds in preparation for pouring and inserts cores.
- Assembles mold halves, insuring proper alignment and form application of components.
- Installs pouring cup on mold and forwards to pouring area.
- Calibrates sand mixer, insuring that proper ratios are mixed with sand.
- Completes appropriate records of molds produced.
- Cleans mixer daily by removing solidified sand as required.
- Feeds sand into reclaimer following the pouring procedures to facilitate the recycling of sand.
- Maintains an awareness of how process improvements can be achieved and makes related recommendations to the department supervisor.
- Constantly works toward producing products that are acceptable by company standards of quality.
Metal Letter Finisher
- Band saw gates, runners, and excess flashing from cast letters and sorts unwanted pieces into re-melting carts.
- Belt sands gates, flashing, and unwanted roughness from the returns of parts.
- Drills and taps letters or stud weld parts for further handling or customer installation.
- Hand finishes the areas on parts that were not accessible at belt sanding.
- Blasts the returns of parts to create a consistent, uniform frosted finish.
- Polishes parts to a \"near mirror\" consistent finish.
- Washes parts to remove polishing compounds or unwanted residue from the finishing process.
- Stroke sands parts to remove the rough outer layer and create a smooth, consistent finish necessary for painting, polishing, or anodizing.
- Edges and racks parts according to color and requested ship date.
- Maintains a thorough awareness of order dates, reworks, and remakes, plus prioritize work flow accordingly.
- Signs and dates the quality check sheet attached to the back of the order sheet(s) after correct completion of the order.
General Requirements
- Follows all safe work practices as outlined in Employee Manual and Safety Orientation. Completes all required safety training and participates in monthly connection meetings.
- Drive forklift and other material handling equipment as required.
- Will participate in Lean/Continuous Improvement efforts in the plant
- Maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
- Maintains responsibility for the safety of one\'s self and other employees in the work area.
- Completes records of department\'s production. Reports department needs to supervisor.
- Maintains a neat working environment.
- Ability to lift 50lbs frequently and 75lbs occasionally.
- Perform similar or related various duties as required.
Required Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma /GED or equivalent demonstrated competency through work experience
- Experience in a production environment
- High level of mechanical aptitude
