Job Description:

SummaryThe Student Innovation Center is seeking qualified candidates for a Building Services Specialist II who will be responsible for providing coordination, supervision, customer service, and equipment management for the lower-level makerspace.

The lower-level makerspace supports the training and supervision of student organization and club users housed in the Student Innovation Center assembly bay. The makerspace includes metalworking equipment such as mills, lathes, tubing equipment, bandsaws, drill presses, welders (MIG and TIG), etc. Responsibilities also include facilitating and supervising assembly bay use, composites fabrication, lunar testing, and dynamometer testing.

The Building Services Specialist focuses on three main areas: makerspace coordination, equipment management, and customer service. For makerspace coordination the Building Services Specialist is responsible for: implementing safety standards, coordinating student use of the makerspaces, implementing best practices in training and supervision of equipment, maintaining records, managing makerspace resources, and communicating additional needs. For equipment management the Building Services Specialist is responsible for: general equipment upkeep and basic repairs, maintaining a functional and clean makerspace, developing and implementing practices and procedures for training and use of equipment, supporting student requests and projects, learning and growing personal equipment skills, and ensuring safety and security of equipment and makerspace. For customer service the Building Services Specialist is responsible for: creating a welcoming environment for all users, maintain high levels of professional relationships and ethics, planning and participating in professional presentations, events, workshops, and outreach events that showcase qualities of the Student Innovation Center, and maintaining effective communication with managers, stakeholders, and users.

The successful candidate is a self-starter who exercises tact and diplomacy, has a strong focus on safety, has demonstrated skills in building and maintaining relationships, exhibits attention to detail, and has excellent leadership, supervisory, and communication skills. The successful candidate also has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate and become a subject matter expert on all equipment in the lower level. All staff members are expected to interact professionally and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

The open position has a schedule of Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with 30-minute breaks at noon and 5:30 p.m.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

Example of Duties

  • Maintains, calibrates, and communicates repair needs on equipment in the makerspace

  • Manages the scheduling, training, and use of makerspace equipment

  • Adminsters safety protocols and communicates with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)

  • Updates training and safety documents

  • Develops, implements, and collaborates on innovative processes within the makerspace and building

  • Acts as a primary point of contact for the makerspace and representative of the Student Innovation Center

  • Creates and maintains professional relationships with leadership, coworkers, student workers, stakeholders, and makerspace users

Level Guidelines• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity• Provides guidance to students
