Location: Highway Design Team, Design Bureau Shifts: Days, Monday through Friday, flexible work schedule The Design Bureau is looking to hire a Design Technician Specialist that will be part of a team designing highway improvement projects and construction plans that will be used to enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa. This position will focus on, but not be limited to, 3R and Super 2 projects. This will include designing pavement rehabilitation, widening, intersection improvements, and new lanes to existing pavement. Understanding the principals of highway design will be a benefit. Typical Responsibilities:
Participates on a team that makes decisions that effectively balance mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost and long-term maintenance.
Produces highway project plans that are consistent with Iowa DOT design guidance.
Assists in calculation of roadway geometric features including vertical and horizontal highway alignments.
Assists in the design of intersections, drainage systems and traffic control plans.
Assists in the development of 3-dimensional computer models of the proposed roadway.
Calculates material quantities that will be needed to build the proposed roadway project.
Prepares final details needed to clearly communicate the intention of plans to a road contractor.
Uses various engineering software programs to generate project information.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent), and experience equal to eight years of full-time work in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, or right of way.2) All of the following (a and b):
a. Six years of full-time work experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, or right of way; andb. A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, right of way, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection.
3) All of the following (a and b):
a. Six years of full-time work experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, or right of way; andb. A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of an accredited vocational program in engineering technology, design drafting, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, construction inspection, or cartography equals two years of full-time experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, right of way, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection.
4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Design Technician.
