The team you will be a part of:

The Engineering team discovers, develops and evaluates new product ideas, enhancements, or strategic product extensions, and translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products. Leads, plans and tracks all phases of the product life cycle, from inception to introduction into the marketplace. Coordinates with various functions to ensure successful product development and implementation.

This role in summary:

Whirlpool Corporation is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Manager - Backshop Process Engineering to join our Whirlpool Amana Operations Organization. This role will provide overall leadership in setting Engineering strategy and technical direction for Amana’s Backshop with processes consisting of: Stamping, Fabrication, and Finishing Processes (Paint). This reports directly to the plant Director of Engineering and will lead a team of Process Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and Lean Technicians.

The Engineering Senior Manager will work with the Engineering Director to build and execute on the vision for the Plant while concurrently executing against existing objectives. This leader will oversee major capital projects to: install structural capacity, implement automation solutions, and address legacy capital that is a risk to business. It is pertinent this individual has the ability to interact well with all levels of the Whirlpool organization, outside entities, and governmental officials.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop the Factory Master Plan (FMP) strategy for Backshop that aligns with the category Cooking Business Team, long range demand plans, and future New Program Introductions (NPI).

  • Develop plans and drive actions to improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and First Pass Yield (FPY) KPI metrics to reduce overtime and increase throughput.

  • Develop plans and drive actions to reduce scrap losses.

  • Utilize capacity data to align plant capacity to the demand forecast. Identify required capital, develop business cases, secure funding, and execute projects while meeting key deliverables in budget and timing.

  • Drive World Class Manufacturing (WCM) methodologies and champion the concept of ‘Zero’ to eliminate plant losses in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and people.

  • Lead the Focused Improvement (FI) pillar within the WCM framework.

  • Manage cost by monitoring and reducing controllable spend and overtime. Drive Kaizen projects that reduce losses in cost and improve efficiencies.

  • Develop specific short-term and long-term plans and programs to improve productivity and capacity and prepare the necessary budgets and justifications for these projects.

  • Proactively seek and value all types of diversity and work to bring out the contributions of everyone.

  • Build organizational capability through proactive coaching of your direct reports on skill-building and career development.

  • Build relationships with the broader manufacturing organization and with Human Resources, Legal, Demand Planning, Supply Chain and Logistics.

  • Proactively collaborate with peers in other Whirlpool manufacturing locations, global business teams, brand, channel/corporate technology, and finance organizations and leverage enterprise-wide expertise.

  • Drive continuous improvement in the organizational, technical and business information processes/systems through lean/innovative thinking/ideas.

  • Partner with product development teams to ensure the right technology and processes to support new products and to drive seamless product launches.

  • Participate in product line rationalization, simplification, core/non-core discussions.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Discipline

  • 7+ years technical managerial experience in a manufacturing environment

  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience, process development, and/or project execution

  • 3+ years financial project management experience

Preferred skills and experiences:

  • 3+ years at a manager level leading salaried direct reports

  • Bachelor’s degree in: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Business Management

  • Experience in Backshop processes: Stamping, Fabrication, and Finishing (Paint)

  • Experience planning and implementing automation / integration projects to improve business KPIs

  • Experience leading capital project execution

  • Demonstrated ability to drive lean manufacturing initiatives (i.e., World Class Manufacturing)

  • Experience leading the Focused Improvement (FI) pillar leader, or Early Equipment Management (EEM), or are Black Belt Certified, or have other proven lean manufacturing experience

  • Confidence and willingness to take calculated risks, implement new ideas, drive for results, and sustain change

  • Demonstrated ability to provide an engaging work environment

  • Proven record of attracting and developing talented people and effectively allocating and utilizing resources

  • Experience with Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), and Control Plan (CP)
